Environmental issues seen according to Christian faith and the mission God entrusted to mankind as steward of all His creation, have been on the agenda of the Churches in Europe for a number of years.

A specific section of the Commission Caritas in Veritate deals with Safeguard of Creation issues and has organised meetings, prayer events and pilgrimages. Before the Caritas in Veritate Commission was established, CCEE set up a working group in order to organise and promote a series of six consultations with the persons in charge for the Bishops' Conferences of issues related to the environment.

This topic has also been at the centre of a range of ecumenical meetings with CEC, such as the Ecumenical Assembly of Graz (1997) and the Ecumenical Assembly of Sibiu.
