The Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) will officially present the revised Charta Oecumenica on 26 and 27 April 2025 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The event will bring together representatives of different Christian traditions to mark a significant milestone in ecumenism.
Signed in 2001 by the presidents of CCEE and CEC, the Charta Oecumenica has been the cornerstone of European ecumenical cooperation for more than two decades. The revised version seeks to address contemporary challenges and reflect the changing realities of European society and Christianity.
The revision process, which started in 2022, was led by a joint CEC-CCEE working group. Contributions from churches and ecumenical organisations from across Europe and beyond have been carefully considered to ensure that the updated text is in line with current ecumenical needs. This collaborative effort aims to produce a document that promotes unity, peace and joint action among the European Churches.
The launch event in Vilnius will feature contributions from church leaders and provide an opportunity to celebrate the shared commitment of the European churches to work together.
